The Three Amigos

I was very excited to spot these three woodpeckers in the lane just behind my house early morning last weekend as I headed out for a walk. I managed to get this not-so-great photo of them before they started going their separate ways. My book, Birds of Alberta, tells me they are Pileated Woodpeckers.

The book says they have a "maniacal call". Geez, I thought that sound was the teenage boys across the lane.

I agree, good timing! They are impressive birds, aren't they? We have those on our farm and I always love to see them. I think their call sounds like that of a bird from the jungle.

It looks like they are keeping your power pole trees free of pesky insects.;)

What a terrific shot, and what timing! I see them in my backyard during the winter months when I put out suet. Their natural habitat has been pretty much 'destroyed' due to a lot of building and developing, so they fly into the suburbs looking for trees. We have enough of a wooded backyard that draws them in, and sometimes 2 of them come together. I've never even thought of them on phone poles!

These are big birds, quite dramatic when they glide past us in the woods. I've never seen them in the city before. Quite a treat!

Thanks everybody for your comments. I was very lucky with my timing. They just seemed to chat with each other for a few minutes and then carried on. By the looks of the pole I would agree with Northern Shade that they are doing their best to keep it free of pesky insects ;-)
Cameravoyages: I would love to see them glide by in the woods.
