If You're Happy and You Know It....You Must be a Gardener!

Clayton, a Northern gardener (and genius with Clematis!) over at A Prairie Journal in Saskatchewan, has invited me to share 10 Things that Make Me Happy. Well, I couldn’t be happier to join in! This is really the time of year to turn towards the joy and light that spring brings. And I do feel its imminent arrival. As this is a gardening blog, I shall of course include among my 10 items those gardening things that bring a smile to my face.

1. First of all, I have to mention my little garden helper. He makes me smile every day. Especially when he is batting the fluffy blooms of the Little Lamb Hydrangea and laughing his gurgling, hilarious laugh.

2. My sweet hubby who makes my world go ‘round, and does the heavy lifting in the garden. (And is secretly falling in love with gardening - I just know it!)
3. My back garden, which is still in the early stages of being developed. I feel very blessed to have this space to work with as I dream of making it my ideal garden.

4. The resources to create this garden. I know I am lucky.
5. Three dear long time friends, two of whom are gardeners, and one of whom shudders at worms and all things dirt but loves that I am being creative.
6. Walks in the woods, walks snooping at other’s gardens, and walks in public gardens.

7. Visiting your gardens via your blogs. You are all soooo talented!! Yes, you!

8. The opportunity to enjoy the amazing beauty of our world.

9. The anticipation of waiting to see if the first bulbs ever that I planted in the fall will come up.
10. Of course, my plans this year for my garden. More on those later!

I won’t ask any of you to share your lists of what makes you happy; however, I look forward to the cheerfulness of your posts as spring makes her way to your garden. Thanks for the inspiration, Clayton.

Cheers to you all!

The moments you share with your little helper are so precious ! I wish I gardened back when mine was that age. :)

Your vignette is absolutely lovely, Ms. S ! How very eager you must be to pursue your beautiful dream. I will revel in watching it come to fruition.

Dear Ms.S, Sometimes it is very salutary to count our blessings and to think of all the pleasures and advantages we enjoy in life. Your list is wonderfully varied but, rightly in my view, includes people, your child, husband and friends who, at the end of the day, matter so much more than anything else.

I wish I had a helper like yours. I'm looking forward to seeing what you and he do with your back garden this season. Already the hydrangeas look lush and mature, so you've got good bones to start with. What an upbeat, cheerful post, just when end-of-winter doubts and fears were creeping in to my thoughts.

What a beautiful post!! I love your choice of pictures, and your heartfelt words of thanks. There is so much to be grateful for, and it's important to take the time to think of them.

It's good to take the moment and savor what we are blessed with. Makes it even more precious when we realize how wonderful it is.

A stunning post, lovely and upbeat.

I really enjoyed stopping by.

Miss m: You are so sweet! I hope my little guy grows up loving the garden. I want to do some tomatoes in containers with him this summer as our special project.

Edith: As I read it over I realized that there was a lot of gratitude in my list. I do feel we must acknowledge that many of the pleasures in our lives are ours by circumstance more that merit. I do appreciate all my blessings and try not to whine about the rest. :)

Laurrie: We do have lots planned for the summer. This will be the last year of major structural stuff and then after that it is all about the gardening!

Rebecca: I do feel thankful and it does bring a smile to my face to think of all the good things in my little world. And now, more mild weather as the countdown to spring approaches makes me even happier. :)

Muddy Boot Dreams: Jen, I’m glad it brought a smile. We need to enjoy this last little stretch to spring!

Deborah: It really does just take a handful of good things to make life enjoyable doesn’t it?

A garden and family really are blessings, aren't they? The anticipation and beauty a garden brings enriches our world beyond measure.

Lovely shot of your back garden with the fern and Little Lamb (I love that name!) Hydrangea.

Perfect list. And what a thrill to see your very first bulbs come up. I remember that joy very well. Love your shot of the back garden; very lush and lovely.

It was fun reading your list. It made me smile remembering back to my early gardening days. My son was just starting to walk ~ every day in the garden was a delight. It's surprising how much he has learned even though he spent most of his time driving trucks and such down the garden paths. They are wonderful memories to have ~ of a child growing along with a garden. You are creating yours now. And, there's nothing quite like having a heavy lifter to make the work go easier (and also to admire one's efforts). Hope your bulbs all burst into bloom for you this spring. I'll be looking forward to seeing them here!

I am glad I found your blog through Edith's comments. I enjoyed reading your list and your photos are crystal clear! The first photo is so cute with his lawn mower. I remember those days ... we have three boys that used to mow right behind my husband. :)Now, it is very difficult to get them to mow! They are 12, 14, and 18.

Sweetbay: They are blessings! The anticipation of gardening really is half the fun of it. Of course, I am also learning patience. (I love the name of the Little Lamb, too and it seems to be my wee guy’s fav)

Helen: These bulbs better make it after months of waiting! Although, if they do they may have just created a monster as I fully expect I will go bulb-crazy this coming fall. :)

Kate: Between my little helper and my big helper I guess we are all learning to garden together. Now that you made me think of it that way it is even more fun – thanks!

Amy: Welcome! My little guy loves his lawnmower with the bubbles that come out of it. Maybe when he is a teen I will have to put bubbles in the real lawnmower *hee hee* :)

Ms. S ! That was a wonderful list : ) Your little helper and hubby are absolute bonuses with such a great space to garden in !
Reading "northern" gardeners wish lists that sneak out even if they didn't mean to make a wish list .. well .. we are all so READY for Spring and helping our gardens come alive again it is one of the strongest urges in our lives I think ? I am too happy to admit to that force of nature roaring inside of me as well : )
Perfect list girl !!
Joy : )
Can't wait to see how your plans unfold .. remember "before and after" pictures too !!

Joy: Hi! Yes, that force of nature is pretty strong right about now. :)
As for the plans for this year in the garden, I will remember to take "before" pictures this time. I wish I had before we started any of the work. Oh well, the best part is the "after"!

Diane, Thanks for the kind words. :-)

I am excited to try some potted tomatoes with him this year. I think he will be thrilled to see them grow.
